(CASE STUDY) Smart Engineering in Tight Spaces: Air Energy Solves Refinery Condensate Issue

LOCATION: Hastings, VIC

INDUSTRY: Oil & Gas

PRODUCT USED: Europress stainless steel pipework system

The Challenge

At this large oil refinery, a major contractor approached Air Energy to solve a condensate issue in the gas compressor starting airline.

The 3-inch line operated at 25 bar pressure, and the affected section sat in an extremely tight, low-clearance area beneath walkways and stairs. Space was limited, access was restricted, and any downtime carried significant cost.

The Solution

Air Energy designed and supplied a custom condensate separation vessel engineered specifically to fit the confined space.

Air enters the vessel at an angle, creating a centrifugal action that separates condensate as it ascends. Inside the vessel, a mesh coalescing screen captures fine droplets before the cleaned air exits through the top outlet tube, which is internally piped back down into the original 3-inch line.

Condensate collects in the sump and is automatically drained, with a manual bypass for maintenance or inspection.

The compact system fits neatly beneath existing infrastructure, no rework or structural modification required.

The Result

The refinery now has a reliable, low-maintenance solution that manages condensate efficiently within a confined footprint.

The system operates safely under pressure, eliminates moisture issues in the start-up airline, and maintains consistent compressor performance, without disrupting ongoing refinery operations.

Takeaway for Industrial Operators

When space is tight and conditions are critical, Air Energy can design a solution that fits, literally.

From concept to commissioning, we build systems that solve problems others can’t.

When off-the-shelf doesn’t cut it, talk to us about custom-engineered systems that perform.
